Supervisor Atkinson withdraws from race

Despite feeling as though she is ‘letting down’ her supporters, Supervisor Jane Atkinson announced last week that she is ‘tired of the spite, deception and mud-slinging’ that she believed would only get worse as Election Day draws near.

In a press release to The K-V Dispatch, Atkinson said that she had agonized over the decision for weeks and finally decided to officially not seek re-lection to the board of supervisors’ Plymouth District seat.

Up to this time, Atkinson’s only opponent in the race is Victoria Town Councilman Wayne Hoover, who recently certified for the election.

“I know there will be cheers from some and maybe a few tears from others, and I truly hate the fact that some will feel I’ve let them down,” Atkinson said in her release. “That has been my most constant worry. But when all is said and done, one must make decisions based on what is best for him or her.”

Atkinson said she was very tired of the spite, deception and mud-slinging of the few in the county who thought of nothing but their own gain.

She also said she was tired of being forced to think about them, and resented the fact that she had to spend precious moments and hours of her time on such thoughts – especially when those thoughts took energy and focus away from what she believed were much more important things in her life.

“I have told many people over the last nine years that I am not a politician – never have been – never will be,” she continued. “I hate what that word has come to represent in our society, and I cannot, and will not, play a game or stoop to a level of ugliness that I believe remaining in this campaign would ask of me.”

Adding that she was honored to have served on the board, she said that she had no regrets, was proud of her accomplishments, and had always tried to do what was good for the county.

In closing, Atkinson explained to the people that she served that she would remain steadfast in her beliefs, and would remain available to concerned citizens to assist them in any way until midnight, Dec. 31, when her current term comes to an end.

“I am so grateful to those who have loyally supported me for so many years, and I want them to know that it has been a very great honor to serve them,” Atkinson said. “I will hold them in my heart always.”

Atkinson was first appointed to the board of supervisors at the end of 2000, after former Plymouth District seat holder Tommy Wright left the board to serve as a Virginia Delegate. After the initial appointment, Atkinson continued to be elected to the position until this final term.
